Not all that glitters is gold. It would be extremely unpleasant for everyone to find out that the jewels in his property are not actually made of expensive metals. The most reliable way to check gold is with a special device from a jeweler. However, not everyone has the opportunity, time and extra money for such events. In this case, you can check the gold jewelry right at home using available means. Fortunately, this is not as difficult as it might seem.
how to check gold at home
You buy a gold product, and after a month or two, an elegant chain turns at best into a new “fashionable” collar for a cat! In order not to fall into such a situation, it is better to check the authenticity of the decoration early, since it can be done at home. Of course, in certified jewelry stores (most likely) they will not sell a fake, however, in order to sleep more soundly, one can also entertain oneself on a day off.
To work with jewelry, we need a small container of water, a cotton swab, an unnecessary toothbrush, and toothpaste. In addition, you will need such a well-known chemical element of group VII of the periodic table at number 53, as iodine! Fortunately, he is literally in every house, but if he still doesn’t, then getting it within half an hour should not be a problem.
You just have to do nothing. We take a cotton swab, dip it in iodine, after which we apply a small amount of the substance to the tested jewelry and monitor the reaction. The lighter the drop becomes, the fewer impurities in the product and the higher the fineness of gold. Accordingly, if a drop turns dark green, then the product does not have the highest sample (something around 50%).
After such a simple operation, it remains only to remove iodine from the surface of the jewelry. In this case, ordinary water, toothpaste, and a brush will help us. In addition, for greater reliability, you can attach a magnet to the decoration. Gold is not magnetized. If the product is attracted, then it is guaranteed to contain a large number of impurities.
